Your Relocation Checklist
Follow these steps and moving will feel manageable, even smooth.
8–10 Weeks Before Moving Day
- Hire a real estate professional to sell your current home and/or buy in your new city.
- Research your new city: commute times, schools/childcare, taxes/insurance, and cost of living.
- Visit in person to lock down housing.
- Choose one place (planner or app) to track all moving info, numbers, and contacts.
6–8 Weeks Before Moving Day
- Pick your move date.
- Create your moving budget.
- Hire movers or reserve a truck for a DIY move.
- Gather important records and documents.
- Declutter and donate what you do not need.
4 Weeks Before Moving Day
- Stock up on boxes, bubble wrap, and tape.
- Pack non-essentials you will not use this month.
- Start change-of-address notifications.
- Update accounts and notify your bank to avoid fraud flags.
- Schedule cancellation of utilities and services.
2 Weeks Before Moving Day
- Prepare an essentials box to pack last and open first.
- Schedule final house cleaning.
- Set up utilities at the new home.
- Refill prescriptions.
- Schedule pet checkups and grooming.
Moving Day
- Take a photo with your old home and say a proper goodbye.
- Load, travel, unload. Verify any damages or missing items on the bill of lading.
- Install appliances and reassemble furniture.
- Tip your movers and celebrate progress.
After the Move
- Unpack within two weeks and recycle boxes.
- Review legal documents (e.g., wills) for any needed updates.
- Update driver license and vehicle registration.
- Test security and fire safety devices.
- Plug into your new city: gym, medical care, shopping, and your go-to takeout.
